Solar geoengineering is reducing the amount of the sun’s energy reaching the earth. It involves throwing particles into the stratosphere that are reflective, sort of like volcano dust that blocks the sun and causes temperatures to drop. Which particles? Calcium carbonate, the stuff of coral, is a strong contender. When? How much? How do we know what the effects will be? Risky, but as the coral that is quoting Andy Parker of the Solar Radiation Management Governance Initiative it may be less risky for surviving coral (and humans) not to try it. (200) Kolbert
