To study animals, or do fieldwork with animals typically requires some sort of human intervention. This seal is emblematic of a less-invasive method of conservation in which the animal is approached and sedated at low tide and the tracking device is quickly glued to its head. The seal within two hours is behaving normally and transmitting data relevant to its conservation. But still, it does have a tracker on its head, however it is not captured, relocated, brought to a lab or caged. Ethical treatment of animal subjects improves the quality of the data being gathered.
